Netflix Prize Leaderboard Landscape
Netflix recently extended the leaderboard to display more than the top 40 contenders. I submitted an entry last week using a crude algorithm just to try out the submission process, and it looks like that put me in 270th place:

Here’s a quick look at the competition based on the leaderboard data (these charts only cover the progress prize contenders as shown on the leaderboard today). You can see the impact of Simon Funk and Timely Development releasing source code for an SVD algorithm in the middle hump of the RMSE chart (lower RMSE is better):

It looks like there are around 250 people in the running who have submitted in the last 40 days:
